Fabulous Friday

Today, was another wonderful day in the world of TY

The day started when we found out the winners of yesterday's fashion show, congratulations to all the winning groups! Thanks to the Home Economics teachers for helping us with that project, it was defiantly one of the most enjoyable projects we've done.

Next we had our annual school carol service. We all had so much fun singing out hearts out. Sive, Emily, Rebekah and I had been practicing all year to get a chance to sing, we even had some dance moved thrown in. At the carol service, the girls who achieved great results in their Junior Cert received a certificate to acknowledge their works. Well done to everybody and a huge congratulations to Lana who got all A's and was given a gold medal! Great work Lana :)

Also six of us from Transition Year had our picture taken on behalf of the year for winning the Edublog & Spider Award's! It's great to have won two blogging awards within one week so GO TRANSITION YEARS!

In Spanish class we drew festive pictures and put them around the room.
Here's some Spanish Christmas words:
Mary: María
Baby Jesus: el niño Jesús
Father Christmas: Papá Noel
Holly: el acebo
A cribun pesebre
Angels: los ángeles
Merry Christmas: ¡Feliz Navidad!

And here's our classes favourite Christmas tune, hope you enjoy!

Snow is falling... almost!

Oh how I love Christmas!

We're really into December now and everything is feeling oh-so 'christmassy' and I love it. We put up our Christmas tree and decorations yesterday and the house is sparkling with red and gold glitter.
In school a few of the teachers have transformed their classrooms into little Santa kingdoms. Ms.C's room is amazing with so many lights and tinsel, I cannot wait for English now!

It's freezing cold out and everyone is wrapped up in hats and gloves. There are thousands of Christmas shoppers buzzing around town and every shopping bag seems to have some Christmas design. The Christmas spirit around town is amazing with people caroling and collecting for charity.

I spent today sorting out Christmas presents to St.Vincent De Paul which is an Irish charity. They do huge collections every Christmas for struggling families. We donated toys and food to this charity in school to try and help out. Today my friend Clare and I helped her mom to sort the girls and boys toys into different age groups. It was great to see even though most families will probably find it hard this Christmas, people are still thinking of thoes less fortunate and giving what they can. This charity makes such a huge difference every year, please check it out here!

Finally here is one of my all time favourite Christmas songs, hope you enjoy it! :)

Merry Christmas Everybody :) xo

Desert Flower

'Desert Flower' is a film about one women's struggles and fight against gender equality. It's based on a true story about the supermodel Waris Dirie.

We watched Desert Flower in religion class after studying the eight millennium develop goals. One of the millennium goals we studied was gender equality so both men and women in all societies are equal. For more information about the millennium goals please check out this website.

Here's a quick insight into the film, I won't spoil everything for you though, as it really is a touching and interesting film I would recommend others to watch.
The film 'Desert Flower' begins in Somalia where Waris Dirie was born. We see Waris as a beautiful girl taking care of the animals and separated from the men in the family. One thing our class noticed was at meal times the men and women are shown to eat separately.
Waris's family do not have much money and are planning on selling Waris to a very old man in exchange for camels. Waris runs away just before this happens to Mogadishu where her mother has family and then on to London.
Waris faces many stuggles thoughout her journey. We see Waris being treated poorly due to her gender.
When she is abandoned in London she becomes homeless for many years and is unable to speak English until she meets a girl about the same age as her, who is an aspiring ballet dancing faces on-going rejection.
The girls begin to become close friends and live together in a small hostel room. Waris gets a job cleaning and begins to learn English very quickly.
Waris as a young girl in Somalia received a procedure called genital mutilation. This happened young girls in Somalia so Waris think's it is normal, until her close friend shows her it is not.
Due to more gender discrimination Waris refuses to get help from a doctor at first. During this time is spotted by one if the biggest photographers in England and with the help of her good friend she begins to model and become more comfortable in her body.
Waris goes though many problems throughout her life. She has to marry a man just to stay living in London, she then tries to follow her heart but realizes it is too late.
Waris becomes one of the worlds best known super models and is living in New York. Often she is asked to give talks on her life, on her 'story' about how she ran away from Somalia and how she went back to find her mother.
Waris know's this is not the story she needs to share though. She finally begins to talk about genital mutilation  and how is has effected her life so hugely.
The heart filling film ends on a sad but reassuring note. Although there is so much wrong happening, there are people, like Waris Dirie, who can make huge change.

This film shows huge amounts of courage and bravery though Waris. She spends half her life afraid, thinking she is wrong, thinking it was okay for men to change her body. Waris, telling her true story through public speaking and the movie 'Desert Flower' is an up most inprisation to everyone who has a story to tell that can make a change.

More from 'The Sound of Music!'

Okay so I may seem obsessed and maybe I am but I have to blog *again* about the Sound of Music!
But so much has changed since my last 'Sound Of Music' blog.
I spend most of my day working on it, so I need to blog about it too :)

For anyone not in St.Wolstan's wondering why I have this strange obsession with this musical here are the reasons:

  • This year our school is putting on a production of 'The Sound of Music'.
  •  I, along with four other girls, am helping to direct the musical and it is SO much fun! Some of the jobs we have include helping to make the program, stage directions and the technical aspects of the production (which I am very slowly learning about). We stay back after school everyday with all the cast and crew members. Although it's rehearsals and it's in school, it's one of the best experiences of my life.
  • Everyone involved is so helpful and always putting each other in good mood! As sappy as it sounds we've really all become a family (embarrassing that I think that could be a direct quote from Ms.W).
  • I enjoy coming to school on a Saturday now, how weird am I?!
  • The musical is really amazing though, if you're looking for something to do in your school please suggest a musical!
  • We even have a blog Sound of St. Wolstan's,which has gotten over 10,000 views! So please have a look.

The musical is taking place from the 5th to the 8th of December and tickets are selling out so quick, so if you want to go act fast!
Honestly though, I don't know why you wouldn't go. With such beautiful singing from Leah and Noel, amazing acting by everyone from Nuns to Nazi and wonderful dancing with hip hop dancers and ballerinas you'll be sad you missed out.
Tickets are on sale for everyone in school on Wednesday and Thursday of this week and next week so please, do the sensible thing and grab a ticket, only €10 ;)

Work Experience begins & ends, already?!

Sorry to my fellow bloggers that my blogs have become less and less but my time is so consumed with Sound of Music right now!
But back to the meaning of this post: WORK EXPERIENCE *love heart*

So I've successfully finished my first week of Work Experience in a primary school. It's the school I use to go to so it was great to see some familiar faces on Monday morning (and even better, to be remembered by the teachers!)
It's so sad to think it's all over, I  miss Junior Infants so much. Room.3 has become like a second home to be *tear flick*.
Here's a short re-cap of my week days:
Monday I woke up super excited and met with Eimear, who is doing work experience in the same school as me. We met our supervisor, Ms.Farrell, and she showed us around the school.
Eimear and I then went to different Junior Infant classes. Afterwards with helped out with various jobs like setting up the hall for a mass.
Tuesday  Wednesday and Thursday was much the same and yet so different and not in the slightest boring.
Friday we helped set up for a science exhibition and talked to all the students about their projects which were amazing! I spent time with my Junior infants of course, who, after a week I really loved more than anything.
Leaving Aghards on Friday afternoon was surprisingly hard with the kids telling me 'They'd miss me more than Christmas!' My heart broke!

I learnt allot this week, like despite what people say I'm very patient. Also I really enjoy the hands on classroom work better than any office work. Thinking back on the week makes me want to teach when I'm older. Although there's so much more I'd like to do with my life teaching has become a huge contender thanks to my week at Aghards.
For anyone thinking of places for work experience, I'd really advice a primary school if you have even a small interest in teaching because you learn so much about yourself and hopefully will enjoy it as much as I did!

Geography FINITO!

Our geography project which we have been doing since September is now finished, I am SO relieved that I don't have to look up anything about Hawaii and Sri Lanka when I'm not visiting the countries.
Sitting in I.T class a few girls are spending the last few minutes before Geography to finish their project/
Sive and I though, are sitting back blogging without a stress as we finished the project at home.
Yaaay for no stress! Becky, the third member of our group, also finished her part of the project last night. She's gone home to get her hair done and go to Katy Perry! I am beyond jealous!
Enjoy the concert Becky, see you in Austria... I think that's our first country in the project.

English lover's dream day out :)

Last Wednesday we had a very fun Transition Year day out.
We set off on our buses, Fodla buzzing on the mini bus (again!). We broke into our classes, all we had to do was find Sarah Kelly who had disappeared to Eiru and then we set off to our first stop.

In the National Library we saw an exhibition of old Irish artifacts and drawings. It was really enjoyable when Ms.C explained the maps to Sive and I.

Next we went to the National Museum where we saw the bog bodies! It was so surreal. Some of the bodies were still so intact. It was hard to believe that they had been there so long. The bodies really reminded me of a book called 'Bog Child' by Siobhan Dowd which is one to read! In the National Museum we also saw an exhibition called The Faddan More Psalter. It was so interesting! I watched a short video here and decided on the spot I want to be an archaeologist. Well, I change my career path about every month but it's nice to have options. If you want to become an archaeologist too here's the link to The Faddan More Psalter project on the National Museum website. It's a great website, have a look around it. Or better yet, visit the museum. It's great... as museums go ;)

Next we went to the Yeats exhibition. I loved it! It was filled with primary sources from the W.B Yeats and his family. It was so interesting to see his school reports, diaries and family tree along with so many poems and plays. I was really shocked by how many poems he had wrote. There was interactive boards at the exhibition and they showed a timeline of pretty much everything important in the life of Yeats. I really did learn a lot, I'm not trying to impress the teachers.

Then was lunch on Grafton street. Walking around with Shannon and we see a camera man from Rte, being Meg, I asked him could we be on the TV and he said yes please! So airing today (Tuesday) at 4 o'clock on Rte2 you will see Shannon and I play our very small, and not so important part in this TV show. What it's about? You'll have to tune in to see :)

Finally we went to Juno and the Paycock in the Abbey theatre. It was a great performance and the acting was really strong. Mary and Johnny's acting really impressed me, maybe it was because Johnny was so good looking though. Everything from the stage direction to the lighting was excellent in this performance.

Thanks to the English teachers for organising a great day out, it was enjoyed by all! :)

The Hills are Alive with THE SOUND OF MUSIC

This year in St.Wolstans we are preforming 'The Sound Of Music'.

I'm an assistant director along with Shannon G and Lana. Ms.W is the overall director and I do not envy her, she has so much work to do with the musical but I know she's enjoying it.
That's where the three of us assistants come in, we try to help with everything we can like helping to direct scenes, making sure everyone shows up to rehearsals, organising props and costumes and so much more.
We have rehearsals four times a week for about an hour and a half, sometimes more, sometimes less but mostly more! Everyday we cover more ground of the musical and we see everything coming together a little bit more.
I really enjoy directing and I defiantly will think about it as a career. Before 'The Sound of Music' I didn't think directing was something I'd like but now, thanks to Ms.W, I have yet another career option.
'The Sound of Music' takes place from December 5th till December 8th and no doubt it will be fabulous! For more information visit "The Sound of Music' blog!
Great work in the musical so far everyone, hope it all pays off.

Oh wow, Cluster Maps!

Mrs. L thought us how to add gadgets to our blogs in I.T class. We added a 'Clsuter Map' which shows you how many people are visiting your blog and more excitingly where they are coming from.
We all thought we'd have a few views of Kildare, Dublin, places around Ireland but not... wait for it... CALIFORNIA!
Whoever the wonderful people from California are who are visiting our blogs, from St.Wolstans Ty we'd like to say thanks! ;)
Please comment on our blogs so we can visit yours and so the blogging continues....

Educating Essex... In Wolstans

Over the past few Religion classes we have been learning about bullying. Of course it's alot more interesting than it sounds, everything is in Ty!
We're watching the channel 4 show Educating Essex. It's about a school, in Essex, that deals with all kinds of problems. We watched the bullying episode.
The show focuses on two very different students. Gabby who is head girl and an all rounder and Sam who doesn't take school to seriously. Both are victims of bullying in different ways.
Gabby has been dealing with a group of girls she use to be friends with giving her a hard time. She thinks it's coming to an end when she starts to get scary texts saying things like 'I know where you live'. Gabby tells the school and her mom straight away and the culprut is found. I won't tell you what happenes next you'll have to watch it here to find out :)
Next is Sam, he isn't the best student but he does make the effort when he asked nicely. The bullying between Sam and his 'friend' Dean is very two-sided constanstly calling eachother names. Once again to watch what happens between the boys click here
Educating Essex is a great show and surprisingly did educate us. Click on the link and watch it too. You know you want too ;)

5 things to do... very soon

So Mrs. L has dissapeared today but she has left us with a blogging task, 5 THINGS TO DO THIS WEEK. Problem is it's Thursday, so this is a little bit of a challenge. Good thinking Mrs. L!

No.1: Make our (insert secret design here) for fun walk! Sorry it's a secret but all shall be revealed tomorrow.

No.2: Go to my first directors rehersal of our school's production of the 'Sound of Music'. Shannon Gannon, Lana, Sive and I are working with Mr. W to direct the musical. I'm so excited and cannot wait to boss people around!

No.3: Go to hockey training! Yaaay for hockey, haven't been out training for a week and half and hopefully it won't be too tirering.

No.4: Fun walk! On Friday we're all dressing up and doing dances and going on a nice long (hyper) walk around celbridge. The fun walk is awesome and this year we've spent extra time preparing as we're Ty's and alot is expected from our Fun walk dance routine. I can't say what we're doing yet but shall upload a video of the whole thing as soon as possible. The excitment is THRILLING!

Last but without a doubt not least no.5: Go to see 'The Lion King in 3d' -cue screams!! You may think it doesn't have much to do with Ty, but our home ec project is making an outfit and ou theme is 'The Lion King' so really it will be a very educational trip and I am BUZZING for it. 'The Lion King' is an all time favourite of mine and I can't wait to see how they change it up in 3d.

p.s I have to add a little note to say goodbye to Sive. Shes gone to New York City for a few days and here in Fodla we're already missing her loads! Have a blast Sive and bring Fodla back some sweets :)

Around the world in a geography class

In Ty geography we're travelling around the world in groups of two and three. Rebekah and Sive are my partners on this adventure.
We're going to six different countries, we have to organize two countries each flights, accommodation and everything else. We'll be spending two months in each country so altogether  we're off for a year!
The countries we're visiting are Austria, Chad, Haiti, Hawaii, Sri Lanka and Australia. I'm in charge of Hawaii and Sri Lanka :)
Some things planned so far in Hawaii are; surfing lessons in Wakiki, beach days on Kuhio beach, visiting Leahi (Diamond head state monument) and boat trips to the smaller islands. In Sri Lanka we'll be going on cultural trips, tasting and practicing the cuisine of Sri Lanka and visiting places such as Colombo and Jaffina Lagoon. And that's only the start of it!
I'm surprised how exciting I'm finding this project. I definatly have to visit both Hawaii and tSri Lanka some day... I really wish this trip was real. This website is great for all types information on Hawaii and the pictures are amazing.
Incase you haven't guessed though, we aren't actually going to these countries. It is all virtual but oh well, some day maybe!

Mini Company Crash.

'...yeah mini companies great, but you have ALOT of fights'

That's mostly what I've heard from past Ty students about the mini company project which makes me nervous, cause well, no one enjoys fighting!
Although, luckily, we haven't fought in our group yet we cannot seem to come up with an idea that everyone agrees will sell. I really want a great idea but I just can't seem to find the inspiration for something whacky, which seems to be everyone's problem in my group. We've thought about doing some sort of fashion and beauty advice computer program, a GPS locator for keys and mp3 (etc...) and alot of other casual ideas. Nothing is getting us excited though! We've set up a Facebook group to try and get us motivated so hopefully we'll have a shockingly genius idea and be sent on a trip to Hawaii as champions :)

Special blog to Becky Crickley, Sive Ftizer, S.Kelly, Em's Daily and Fifi Trixabell!

We're all getting eachother through this I.T class with Emma's hilarious blog 'kicked our heels off, painted the town red' and listened to some banging J.Lo tunes ;)
Some facts about 'ma gurls': Becky's real name is Rebekah and she has a deaf cat, which she loves!
Sive is going to a ploughing vestival on thursday, cool kid.
S.Kelly loves Ali G, 'Boo Ya  Ga Seeh'
Em's Daily is really 'Daly' I just though the newspaper pun was awesome. She also is known as nomad.
And Fifi Trixabell, well this girl is awesome she only eats banana's which smell nice 'Its hard to find a good smelling banana'. Odd one Fiona!
The rest of Fodla are superstars too but thats all I have time for this I.T class.
Much love xo-M

Scientists are born!

This year we're entering the Young Scientist Exhibition. We broken up into groups of two or three and we have to think of an idea which is somewhat scientific. There's a huge range of projects from 'Onions tears', 'do shampoo companies fool you?' and 'scrucbs v.s suckers!'
Aoibheann, Rachel and I have called our project 'Could this be a Cool Current?'. We're showing that fresh water is denser than salt water which is shown in the melting icebergs and the North Atlantic Drift. It sounds complicated at first but once we talked it through (a few times) we really found it interesting and decided it was the project for us :)
Now we have to write a one proposal about our project which will hopefully get us into the Young Scientist to show everyone what we're researching... and get a day or two off school.

Heres a link if you want to get involved or see what the Young Scientist is all about! http://www.btyoungscientist.ie/

Monday morning blues turned upsidedown

This morning i dragged myself to school after a great weekend, school free. Everyone was tired and not in school mood. This all quickly changed with our first class though......
We had P.e with our tutor Mrs.O'C, we pushed back all the tables in the library and got ready to dance. Why? Because the FUN RUN is less than three weeks away! *Alarm Bells*
For most years this wouldn't mean too much, but we're Ty's and it mean a lot. Our song and dance is top secret and not for the eyes reading this blog but once the day comes round everything will be revealed in shiny glory and maybe even a video of our triumph will be uploaded.
Lets hope it's amazing now! Go team Fodla :)

And the stress ends...

On Wednesday we gathered in our 3rd year class groups for the last time to collect the results of the Junior Cert exams. Nerves were high to say the least, with tears before we even saw the results (me being one of these over emotional people!) Although some results were disappointing, most people were delighted and saw their effort had paid off.
The A, B, C and D's were quickly forgotten as the celebrations began! Most of our Ty and 5th year group headed out to time nightclub, where everyone danced all night. It was definitely a night to remember :D
All I can say now is thank god I never have do to my junior cert again, and good luck to all the 3rd years!

Carlingford Baby (day two)

Woken up at what felt like 3 in the morning everyone of us stumbled out of bed to hear the crazy music blaring out of the intercom, Carlingford really knows how to wake teenagers up!
We started off wild day number two with (once again) a trip up the mountain this time for ab-sailing and rock climbing. Ab-sailing had me shaking with fear but thanks to the great jokes of the instructors  I managed to jump down the cliff edge hoping I could go on forever.
Finally our last adventure of the trip was orienteering which also brought us on our last trip up that dreaded mountain. Our team of four soon became mixed into a team of about 10 stopping half way up a very long steep slope for a picnic of two bars of chocolate and a few lolly pops! Everyone's mood was lifted and orienteering became the best fun around.
It left us with some of the craziest sayings possibly due to the lack of sleep or maybe just the enormous amount of sheep. Here are just a few of the examples:
'Its a 'G' and there's a ram!'
'Leah you use to wriggle'
and my favourite 'It's hard to find a really nice banana'
After it all we were so sad to get on the bus and leave the great town of Carlingford! Luckily I had the funniest bus trip of my life, half asleep singing my heart out with Vicky and having some very odd conversations about swans.
It was a really great experience, so thanks Mrs. L for organizing the trip!

Carlingford Baby (day one)

It was an early start to Carlingford Adventure Centre in Co. Louth, everyone was so excited that the tiredness did not enter the bus! When we arrive to the quaint village of Carlingford we all thought we had entered an movie set from an olden day Disney movie.
We dropped our bags and headed straight up the steep mountain (the first exhausting trip of many). Our instructors Matt and Daniel got everyone buzzed and into our camouflage jumpsuits and matching hats. We then began laser tag!
It was unbelievably fun and everyone got involved straight away, we felt like little kids with toy guns, but I guess that's what we were really! I got the very lucky job of minding Bruno Junior who was the laser tag mascot, a little teddy bear who I kept by my side for the whole duration of our Carlingford visit :)
Sadly we had to leave laser, but not without the blue team (GO BLUES) beating the red team on numerous occasions.
The day continued the lunch, a challenge course and dinner. By dinner time everyone was half asleep and up to their necks in dirt. That didn't stop us though, we could not wait to head out again for Night Line!
We headed up to the forest, by the time we arrived darkness had fallen everywhere, which in a forest is pretty scary. Not so sure why but I decided to stand at the front meaning I would be leading half my year though a dark forest, BLINDFOLDED. Good thinking Meg! Once we got started though I began to overcome my fears, slightly. Luckily the very good looking Simon, was beside me telling me if I was about to fall over a log or walk into a tree. Using our Chinese whispers skills we got through the forest and completed Night Line without losing anyone to the bears!
Recked but still buzzing from the Carlingford air we spent our night in the comfy common room with our friends from St. Marys in Drogheada.  They were a school of Ty boys and everyone made friends instantly. We had a huge sing-song and a great laugh, disappointed the night was over we headed to bed. Luckily most of my 12 man room got a few hours sleep since we were recked from our amazing first day!

to be continued......

Carlingford Countdown :D

Only about 114 hours till Carlingford now! I've been talking non-stop to the past Ty's about the trip and all I've heard is 'its the best 2 days ever, I'm so jealous I can't go again!' so I'm very excited for to get on the bus Monday morning at the crack of dawn, I wonder is it okay to wear your pj's for the bus trip? I'm bringing my pillow for sure!
I can't wait to get loads of sweets for the trip, I hear you can melt marshmallows over the fire in the evenings. Only thing to say is Ty's will be backing yummy s'mores for sure this Monday night, CANT WAIT!!
xo-M

Hockey's Back!

Thursdays evening have happily brought back hockey, I'm exhausted after our first training session but delighted to be back. This year I've moved to the senior team along with about half of my junior team, it was pretty intimidating running around with the 5th and 6th years at the start but we quickly forgot about ages as we worked up such a sweat!
We also have a new coach, she's seems to know her hockey so everyone is pretty excited to learn some new tricks this year and hopefully head towards the final! Although we all defiantly miss Ms.V who was an amazing coach :)
My legs hurt from all the drills so there's a real sign I better get back into shape...
Bye for now, xo-M

Socially Developing

Yesterday, Tuesday, I took part in a social development course with my class Fodla. It was really great fun, breaking up into groups and working out methods to insure Santa gets all the presents ready as the elves were slacking off.
We learnt through coloured cards what personalities we had. I was a red director, closely followed by a yellow entertainer. The other groups were the green mediators and blue observers. It was crazy to see how we all fit into our groups and all had our own way of doing things.
We had other fun activities to 'socially develope' ourselves such as learning the importance of a firm handshake (the limp ones were depressing) along with walking with confidence and embarrassing moments from our classmates, like Emily's fear of spiders causing her to strip in the middle of her green when he friends said there was a spider on her.
Got to go now, blog soon :)

Thursday's fun

We had our first Thursday of Ty today and that meant our first fun afternoon! We all changed into our comfy tracksuits at lunchtime and were ready for our new activities. The three classes; Fólda Eiru and Banba each rotated in the three activities. They are dancing, photography and pilates.
Firstly our class Fódla had photography with the lovely Rob.
He told us about himself and how he got interested in photography. Rob showed us slides of amazing pictures he had taken, and explained some tricks like slowing down the shutter speed and mainly using the flash for people only. A black and white picture of baby's feet with a brightly coloured flower at the toes was one of my many favourites.
Next we headed to pilates, everyone was anxious to know what to do as we quickly realized it was much more of a work-out than yoga. We really enjoyed it though and had a great laugh as some positions were a little impossible for us newbies.
All stretched and ready for action we headed for the last activity of the day, dancing. It was no ordinary modern dancing though, we're learning 1920 and 1950 swing style dancing! Straight away everyone knew it would be a blast, with Ms.O'R getting into every move and pouting her lips (telling us to copy her!). No doubt my favourite move was the charleston, but all the quick movements of your feet and swinging of the hands is so much fun!
Now everybody is saying how much they love Thursday so bring on next week! :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSFzLfgKKLI
p.s here's a link to a cool example of charleston dancing, hopefully we'll be dancing like them soon, dresses and all.

This is my first blog of Transition year and it very exciting! Its thursday morning, day four of ty. Everyone here in class Fódla is buzzing to blog but IT is coming to an end so the blogger's of Fódla will continue later :)
